Katarina & Lovro — A Destination Wedding on the Adriatic Coast

October 3, 2026

A wedding in Dalmatia, from a church ceremony and rooftop celebration to a sunset sail on a traditional fishing boat.

Katarina and Lovro’s wedding brought together many of the things that make the Croatian coast such a special place for a destination wedding — old stone, Mediterranean light, the Adriatic Sea and a celebration that moved naturally from tradition to something completely relaxed and personal.

Their day took place in Kaštela, along the Dalmatian coast between Split and Trogir, beginning with a church ceremony before continuing to a rooftop celebration at Spinaker Restaurant in Marina Kaštela.

What made the day especially memorable was the balance between those different settings. The ceremony had a sense of tradition and intimacy, while the rooftop reception opened the whole scene towards the sea, with warm evening light and views across the marina.

A wedding day in Dalmatia

One of the reasons I enjoy photographing weddings in Dalmatia is the variety you can find within a very small area.

A wedding day can begin inside a quiet stone church, move through old Mediterranean streets and end only a few minutes later beside the sea.

That contrast gives the photographs a natural rhythm and, for couples planning a destination wedding in Croatia, it also means the location becomes part of the story rather than simply a backdrop.

Katarina and Lovro’s day had exactly that feeling.

Church ceremony and rooftop celebration

The first part of the day centred around the church ceremony, surrounded by family and friends.

I always look for the moments around the expected ones — hands being held, nervous expressions, laughter and the small interactions between people that happen naturally throughout the ceremony.

Later, the atmosphere changed completely at Marina Kaštela.

The rooftop setting at Spinaker Restaurant overlooked the Adriatic, with the late afternoon sun moving across the sea and the marina below.

It was elegant without feeling formal, and the open setting gave the entire celebration a relaxed Mediterranean character.

Portraits in the Mediterranean light

Dalmatian summer light can be strong, especially before sunset.

Rather than always looking for soft shade, I like using that light when the location allows it.

The old walls, deep shadows and bright stone around Kaštela gave us the opportunity to create photographs with a more graphic and editorial feeling.

Strong contrast, simple compositions and a few quiet moments away from the rest of the wedding created a completely different visual chapter within the day.

A traditional Dalmatian gajeta

For the final part of the portrait session, we went out onto the Adriatic in a traditional wooden gajeta.

The gajeta is an old Dalmatian fishing boat, deeply connected to the maritime history of the Croatian coast. For generations, boats like these were part of everyday life in small fishing communities across Dalmatia.

Today, that history gives them a character that modern boats simply cannot replicate.

Photographing Katarina and Lovro aboard a gajeta felt completely natural to the location. The wooden boat, open sea, coastline and warm evening light created a setting that was distinctly Dalmatian.

As we moved away from the shore, the pace of the day changed.

There was less noise, more space and nothing around us except the sea, the wind and the final light of the afternoon.

Those are some of my favourite conditions to photograph in.

A destination wedding on the Croatian coast

For couples planning a destination wedding in Croatia, Dalmatia offers much more than beautiful scenery.

It is the combination of historic towns, stone architecture, islands, marinas, traditional boats and the Adriatic Sea that gives weddings here such a strong sense of place.

You can have a traditional church ceremony, a modern rooftop reception and a sunset boat ride all within the same wedding day — without any of it feeling disconnected.

Katarina and Lovro’s wedding was a perfect example of that.

A day rooted in local tradition, surrounded by the Adriatic, and finished on the sea.

And for me, that is exactly what makes photographing weddings in Dalmatia so special.
